"Project A" HKL Interview:
Sammo
Hung, the guy is very very adoptable with any sort of prop, any sort of
weapon. Very good with swords, very good with anything, whether it’s a
tennis racket or it’s a tripod he’ll all make that into a weapon and
will use it beautifully. He’s really the unsung hero of Jackie’s films,
because he’s done a lot behind the scenes for Jackie. He’s had lot more
filmmaking experience than Jackie at the beginning and he helped Jackie
out in the early part of his career and continues to do so. When I
interviewed Sammo once he actually said to me that he wouldn’t work as
a choreographer on anybody else’s films only Jackie’s. And I think that
is shows how much respect they have for each other. Sammo’s really been
the driving force of Jackie…
Jackie
Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao have made an enourmous contribution to
HK cinema. Mainly because they're a terrific trio, they really
work well together, they compliment each other perfectly, but also
they're very-very successful in their own right. Sammo Hung has made
over 113 films, Yuen Biao has made about 87 and again, these are just
as actors and they do everything else on films as well. They really
sort of compete Jackie in that they are very adaptable, they have lots
of uses... They came from the same roots, they all want to make it,
they all want to do good for cinema and they all want to do it properly
and I think that's why they're so successful and popular.
The
chemistry I believe exists between Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen
Biao comes from the fact that they come from not very luxurious
beginnings. They went to the very tough Peking Opera School where they
were just trained for hours and hours on end. So they have that bond
ready, and we all know that childhood bonds are very difficult to
break. They all really compliment each other, they look at each other's
strengths and weaknesses and they put those on screen and they use
those perfectly within scripts within stories. And I think this is what
makes them so successful, the sort of chemistry you can't create, it's
the sort of chemistry you can't buy, it exists because they all want
the same things, the all know each other inside-out and they've all
remained very-very firm friends.
