Plot: Chin Fong-tin (Sammo Hung) is a small time con man trying to get the Shanghai Express full of wealthy passengers to stop at his little town to improve business for the locals plus make some money for himself. Unknown to him there are gangsters on board with plans to rob the passengers plus some Japanese agents who are trying to steal some National Treasures. His plan to bring wealth soon turns into a desperate fight to save the town he loves.

Review: This star filled and heavily plotted action comedy plays like an Eastern Western and is a pleasure from start to finish. The slapstick style is an obvious tribute to the crazy Hollywood movies of the thirties with the kind of twist you only get from a Hong Kong produced movie. The action sequences are all first rate with a mix of well choreographed martial arts exchanges mixed in with some breathtaking stunts. It is, however Yuen Biao as one of the towns firemen who gets to carry the film along with Sammo Hung as the new (initially reluctant) law in town after the original police rob the bank. In one memorable scene Yuen Biao gets to do a cartwheel off a three story building which is on fire. He lands on his feet and walks away, all in one continuous shot. Incredible! ..But this is just one almost throw away moment in a film that has so much going on you need to view it more than once just to take it all in.

The list of stars assembled by Sammo Hung for this film is almost endless. Richard Ng provides some quality humour as a cheating husband who will do anything to get away from his wife to see his mistress. Eric Tsang, Lam Ching Ying and Yuen Wah also add some comedy moments as the crooked police on the run with their ill gotten gains. For fight fans amongst the many highlights we get Yuen Biao fighting Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao fighting Dick Wei and Sammo Hung going up against a very impressive Cynthia Rothrock. In the action packed finale that sees almost every member of the cast fighting someone else, Hwang Jang Lee gets to show off his incredible kicking skills on film once again.

In conclusion, this is basically a feel good adventure that manages to bring a smile to my face every time I see it. The action, although plentiful, is never gratuitously violent, tending to lean towards an almost slapstick approach. The comedy and action blend with ease making this one of my personal favourite Sammo Hung directed films. I dare you to watch film and not thoroughly enjoy it.
