"Wheels on Meals" HKL interview:
About the location:
We wanted to give the audience an urban landscape that's
refreshingly different. We scouted several places and we found Barcelona,
Spain, to be a very nice city. Then the script was written there and we filmed
there. That was it.
Was the language a problem?
No, because I only spoke Chinese, so that was fine. If they
spoke to me, I'd say, "I don't understand Spanish". I didn't know
what to say. If they spoke English, I'd say, "I don't understand
English". Actually, it wasn't a problem anywhere, because we weren't there
to film a movie in Spanish. We were filming a Chinese movie, so we only had to
communicate with the staff, which wasn't much of a problem. It wasn't a
problem. Yeah, it was a good location with all the different architecture. It
was very lively there. We showed it as a tourist destination, as a plaza. That
was the feeling. It was beatiful. I remember it went well. We constructed a set
of an open-air restaurant there, and... with Blacky Ko on his motorcycle in the
air.
About Blacky Ko's death:
How I feel.. Of course he left a strong impression. We'd
been friends for a long time. We'd worked on many films together. I'd know him
since we were young men, so we all felt very bad about his passing.
Finding Benny "The Jet"
Yeah, I had to find someone who could really fight and
someone to be the evil opponent to fight against Jackie Chan. People said Benny
"The Jet" was very good and they sent me many of his videotapes - all
his fight sequences in competitions - and the sense he conveyed of being able
to fight. I thought he was well suited to fight Jackie Chan in the last scene.
No. Benny is a very smart guy. Whatever you tell him, do this, do that, do
that, fight like that, he was perfect, he was very very good. I think Benny did challange people in Spain to fight
- what we call "challenging someone on their home turf". He did
challange people but Benny would not do anything to hurt anyone in our crew. I
think Jackie Chan would not do that either. I think they were just rumours, but
it is true that Benny "The Jet" did throw down challenges in martial
arts studios in Spain. That's it.
Herb Edelman:
I'd seen many of his films. I think he's very funny. So I asked him to do
a cameo, to be a Western boss and suddenly I thought of him. I thought he was
very suited to this role, so I asked him to give it a go.
Different hairstyle:
I didn't want to look the same in
every film, to try a look that wasn't typical of a local Hong Kong Chinese...
If you look at Westerners, you have all kinds of looks. If you look at Chinese
nowadays, you see all different weird looks and characters. I just wanted a
change of image, regardless of whether it was the set, location, Spain. You
hope the whole film would look... all the characters, images, the sets look
like something newish.
